In the year 680, on the eve of the Battle of Karbala, 51 lunar years have passed since the death of the Prophet (s). The community is in disarray, its leadership having been usurped by the Prophet's erstwhile enemies, the Umayyad clan of the Quraysh tribe of Mecca. Muʻawiya's son Yazid, a drunkard, brutal and corrupt deviant, has been appointed by Muʻawiya as his successor, turning the caliphate into a hereditary kingship. Yazid is demanding that Husain ibn Ali (as) pledge allegiance to him - something the Imam cannot do on moral grounds.
In a small village not far from where the eventual tragedy of Karbala unfolds, a band of three teenage boys attempt to join the Imam (as). To do so, they have to escape the clutches of the cowardly village chief and his ruthless henchmen. The moral choices presented to the three teenagers by the situation that they are confronted with strain their friendship. This forces them to make the kinds of moral choices for which Imam Husain (as) took a stand and for which he was martyred.
Readers of all ages will be able to relate to the parallel tragedy that befell these brave young boys. The story highlights the conflict between personal desires and moral obligations, a dilemma that the Imam himself faced. As the boys navigate this challenging situation, they are forced to confront their own values and principles, just as Imam Husain (as) did before them.
The narrative explores the themes of sacrifice, courage, and the importance of standing up for one's beliefs, even in the face of overwhelming adversity. The boys' journey mirrors the larger struggle of the Imam's followers, who were willing to risk everything to support his righteous cause.
Through the lens of these three teenagers, readers can gain a deeper understanding of the events that led to the tragedy of Karbala. The story serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of Imam Husain (as) and the profound impact of his sacrifice on the hearts and minds of Muslims throughout history.
Ultimately, the narrative encourages readers to reflect on the moral dilemmas they may face in their own lives and to draw inspiration from the courage and steadfastness of the Imam and his companions. It is a poignant tale that resonates with readers of all ages, reminding us of the timeless values of justice, faith, and the unwavering pursuit of truth.
